Travel Documentation Requirements

Before booking your flight it is highly recommended that you review the documentation requirements needed to enter Canada. As a Conference attendee you are considered a "business visitor" in Canada. Most people need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada. Others may only need their valid passport. Not sure what documentation you need as a business visitor? Simply answer a few questions to see what's right for you. When asked, "what do you plan to do in Canada?" be sure to select "attend a meeting, conference, or trade show". Download, print and bring this letter with you to give to Border Control Officers.

Things start to get pretty cold in October, with temperatures regularly dipping below freezing. There isn't much rain at this time of year, but this is the start of the snow season, so make sure you bring plenty of warm layers.

From the Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Downtown Calgary, there are several transportation options available.

  • Uber, Lyft, or Taxi: Rideshare options like Uber and Lyft, along with taxis, are available. The fare typically ranges from CAD $30-40 depending on time of day and distance traveled.

You can find more details and the bus schedule here.

Mobile Data Plans

Check your wireless mobile data plan to make sure there are no fees for traveling abroad. Many phone carriers have international data plans to make sure you do not pay a premium for data usage.

Notify Your Bank

Before going abroad, notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel, and check exchange rates. Although the U.S. Dollar is typically stronger than the Canadian Dollar, your credit card may apply transaction fees for international charges. Know what these are before traveling and try to avoid these. The Bank of Canada exchange rates are published each business day by 4:30 pm ET.

Exchanging Money

Visitors can exchange traveler’s cheques and foreign currency for Canadian dollars at banks, credit unions, trust companies, ATMs, and at exchange booths at the airport. Banking hours typically run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, though some banks offer extended evening hours on certain days. While some establishments may accept US Dollars, they often do so at a premium rate, so it's advisable to carry some Canadian currency.

  • Within Downtown Calgary: Calforex Currency Exchange (In the Core Shopping Centre): com
  • At the Calgary International Airport (YYC): ICE International Currency Exchange: ice-canada.ca

ATMs

ATMs (also called cash points) are widely available across Calgary, including at banks, shopping areas, city hall, and other locations. These machines allow you to withdraw Canadian dollars using a Visa or Mastercard, including US and international cards, provided they are part of a major network. Please note that your bank may charge foreign transaction or ATM fees, and currency conversion rates will apply. It's generally more cost-effective to use a debit card than a credit card for cash withdrawals. For more information on ATM fees, visit Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency.

Tipping

It is customary to leave 15-20% of the bill as tip when eating out, though some restaurants add on a service charge instead. In hotels, people often tip porters. It is polite to round up your taxi fare to the nearest dollar.
