Editor-in-Chief, Information Matters
The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) invites creative, forward-thinking applicants for the role of founding Editor-in-Chief of Information Matters.
Information Matters (IM) is a digital-only communication translational forum for information science, bringing relevant and current research evidence and industry developments, news, and opinion to a global public audience free of charge.
IM is committed to producing translational reports, news, reviews, columns, and features of the highest standards. Our publication serves to inform the public, industry professionals, educational practitioners, and policymakers on information science issues of critical importance to society and civil life. Our readers rely on our content, to be informed and aware, and also to support decision-making. It is therefore essential that every published piece meets our commitment to quality, accuracy, and integrity.
The successful Editor-in-Chief will possess outstanding writing, editing, and creative skills, along with demonstrated planning, organizational and delegation abilities.
To ensure success, the Editor-in-Chief will have a broad knowledge of the field of information sciences, prior digital editing experience, and a keen interest in shaping this new publication to distinguish the content to its target audience. The EIC is expected to actively network within the information sciences community and the ASIS&T community, to keep abreast of developments in the field and to identify candidate contributions.
Top candidates will display an understanding of target audiences, and exhibit a clear vision for a high-impact, translational publication in this domain.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop issue structure, columns, and content areas to produce and publish ~300 articles per year, initially
- Assemble an editorial advisory board of eminent domain specialists
- Generate story ideas and issue themes
- Manage contributors and content producers
- Develop a set of regular contributors
- Identify and solicit relevant contributions
- Determine need for, hire and delegate tasks to an assistant or associate editors
- Approve content, appearance, and layout of the publication
- Oversee licensing and use of design elements and artwork to be used in the publication
- Correspond or meet with contributors and writers to discuss contributions, revisions, deadlines, layouts, and features
- Develop and oversee compliance with regulations, best practices, editorial and community standards
- Actively network within the information sciences community and the ASIS&T community
- Proofread, edit and rewrite articles to meet publication standards
- Actively raise the profile of the publication
- Manage and report on budgets and expenditures
Required:
- Formal education and/or work experience leading to significant expertise in an information sciences role/discipline
- Broad knowledge of the domain of information sciences and passion for positively impacting society
- A clear vision for publication growth
- Editorial experience in a digital environment
- Demonstrable experience in producing relevant content to target audiences
- Strong writing, editing, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to nurture long-term relationships
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to understand and influence target audiences
Preferred:
- Experience with electronic submission systems
The Editor-in-Chief reports to the ASIS&T Board of Directors and receives advisory support from and coordinates with the ASIS&T Publications Committee.
An annual stipend will be provided.
