A Grateful Reflection on the 2024 ASIS&T Conference Experience – Mubarak Hussein
This is part 3 of the blog series where we share reflections from our 2024 NEASIS&T Conference Support Award recipients, offering a glimpse into the value and impact of the 2024 ASIS&T Annual Meeting. Through their experiences, we aim to highlight the learning, networking, and growth that make this event so impactful.
I am deeply honored and profoundly grateful to NEASIS&T for sponsoring my attendance at the 2024 ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Calgary, Canada. This extraordinary opportunity, my first time participating in such a prestigious event, has been an enriching and transformative experience. NEASIS&T’s generosity enabled my participation and significantly contributed to my academic and professional growth in the ever-evolving information science and research. The conference, held at the elegant Hyatt Regency Hotel, was impeccably organized from start to finish. Registration was seamless, creating an inviting atmosphere that set the stage for an exceptional event. Among the early highlights was the IMLS workshop on research proposal and grant writing, where I gained invaluable insights into crafting persuasive proposals and abstracts. The session underscored the importance of collaboration, resilience, and strategic preparation in advancing research endeavors—a lesson I will carry forward in my academic journey.
Exploring Cutting-Edge Ideas
Throughout the conference, I was captivated by sessions that showcased the latest innovations and research in information science. The keynote address by Lerato Chondoma, Associate Vice President of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti Racism (EDI-AR), was particularly inspiring. Her insights on equity and innovation set a high standard for the following discussions. Workshops and panel discussions delved into timely topics such as integrating artificial intelligence in information science education and the impact of social media on research methodologies. These sessions expanded my perspective and provided actionable insights into the field’s emerging trends.
Engaging with Research and Building Connections
Poster sessions offered an interactive and dynamic platform to engage directly with researchers. These exchanges deepened my understanding of diverse projects and facilitated meaningful connections with fellow scholars and experts. The networking opportunities were equally enriching. A highlight was the special dinner for awardees, which fostered friendship and collaboration among participants. Conversations during these gatherings have laid the groundwork for potential collaborations and lifelong professional relationships.
A Transformative Conclusion
The conference concluded with a powerful and inspiring closing speech that left me invigorated and eager to apply the wealth of knowledge I had gained. Every aspect of the event—from the thoughtfully curated sessions to the opportunities for personal and professional engagement—was a testament to the value of bringing together a global community of information science professionals.
Finally, I extend my deepest appreciation to NEASIS&T for their unwavering support and investment in my professional development. This opportunity has broadened my horizons, enriched my knowledge, and empowered me to make meaningful contributions to the field of information science. I am also indebted to the remarkable individuals who played pivotal roles in making this experience so memorable: Lydia Middleton, Pamela Yonker, Cathy Nash, Jill Connors-Jogner, Professor John M. Budd, Dr. Anthony Chow, Professor Abebe, Professor Yuan Xiaojun, Professor Emmanuel Udoh, and Professor Saira H. Soroya.
Thank you, NEASIS&T, for your commitment to fostering growth and innovation in information science. Your dedication to supporting emerging professionals like me is truly inspiring, and I am profoundly grateful for the transformative opportunity you have provided.
