SIG SM Competition Award Recipients 2024

Purpose of the Award

This award is a lifetime achievement award that recognizes sustained contributions to and/or achievements in the field of information science and/or the professions in which it is practiced. Such contributions may include 1) scholarly contributions to the advancement of our field, such as the expression of new ideas, the creation of new technologies, the development of better techniques, or substantial research efforts which have led to further development of thought or devices or applications, or 2) other outstanding contributions to the field/profession of information science, as evidenced by successful efforts in the educational, social, or political processes affecting the profession.

Senior Researcher Award

Dr. Vivek Singh

Dr. Vivek Singh is a distinguished researcher and Associate Professor at Rutgers University, known for his expertise in social media analysis and human-centered AI. With over 100 publications in prestigious venues such as Science, JASIST, and ACM CHI, his work has been supported by funding from NSF and Google, accumulating over 3,600 citations with an h-index of 32 and an i-10 index of 65. Dr. Singh’s pioneering research focuses on enhancing social media safety, including cyberbullying detection, privacy management, and misinformation detection. He has received multiple awards from ASIS&T and iSchools, and his work has been featured by major outlets like The New York Times, BBC, and The Wall Street Journal.

An active member of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Dr. Singh has played a key role in ASIS&T's Special Interest Group for Social Media (SIG-SM), serving as chair-elect when the group won the SIG of the Year award. His PhD advisees have also received prestigious accolades, including the ASIS&T SIG-SM Best Paper Award (2022), iSchools Best Dissertation Runner-Up (2024), and ACM Web Science Best Paper Award (2024), highlighting their contributions to privacy enhancement, reducing online incivility, and mitigating bias in social media.
