Scientivity Contest: And the winner is…

We recently launched our Scientivity contest for students. The task was to submit a piece of research in a creative way. Submissions were due on Friday, December 15th. We received five great submissions and had the difficult task to pick a winner, but we finally did. The jury, consisting of members from the European Chapter and European Student Chapter, rated each submission based on the criteria ‘contents’ (50%) and ‘creativity’ (50%).

And the winner is…

Tjaša Jug from Slovenia with her submission “Metadventure. From Storyteller to Bestseller”!

We are pleased to share her feedback on her experience with the Scientivity Contest:

I am very happy to be the winner of the European Student Chapter Scientivity Contest! This is everything that I could wish for right now as this gave me the motivation for my future work. Participating in the contest was a great experience since I was challenged to present my research area in a creative and interesting way. Yes, I worked hard, but it was worth it! I managed to organize my book metadata knowledge in a meaningful way and present it in a board game form. This was a fun way to prepare the overview of my studies, which is very helpful for my thesis formation. What is more, Metadventure board game, which is the product of this project, became a great tool for my family and friends to learn about my research and to actually understand my work for the first time.

I would like to compliment the European Student chapter for designing this great competition and to thank all the judges who found my submission interesting and creative.

Tjaša Jug will get financial support to attend the iConference 2018 in Sheffield, UK. This amazing prize was made possible by the support of ASIS&T and the Chapter Development Fund. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Form of submission: Game

Contents: “In this game you are a publisher who wants to publish a book with a great content. The World Wide Web offers a great opportunity to market and present your title. But be aware! Your book could get lost in the jungle of different books. To avoid this, you should use rich and high quality metadata, so people to find, identify and select your book. Is your book going to stay unnoticed or will it become a bestseller? In this game, like in real life, you can win by luck or by using your superior metadata skills. Try to be the first to reach the finish and make your book a bestseller!”

Jury quotes:

  • A very creative idea to clarify the topic. In my opinion, the best contribution.
  • A detailed, creative submission with a lot of background information. With the game one can playfully learn about metadata. The design of the game is great as well.
  • An extremely creative submission.
  • I love that you made a game out of your research project! This is a great idea. I would have liked the booklet to be a bit shorter and more exciting though.
