Turning Metadata into Knowledge

Join the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology on March 22 for a program featuring OCLC engineer Jeff Mixter discussing current research in metadata.

OCLC Research has been working on a set of experimental processes that can mine knowledge from a wide variety of data sources such as WorldCat, VIAF, and WikiData. Jeff Mixter and his team theorize that this Knowledge Pipeline could help better synthesize large data sets into cohesive and usable sets of data, and could potentially help improve data quality both algorithmically and through user feedback. They have started to prototype parts of the pipeline and are beginning to develop experimental applications that allow endusers to search, explore and interact with the data.

Jeff Mixter is a software engineer at OCLC, where he works with Jean Godby (OCLC Research) and Kenning Arlitsch (Montana State University) on a IMLS-funded grant project to improve the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of institutional repositories and digital collections. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in History and German from The Ohio State University as well as Master’s Degrees in Library Information Science and Information Architecture/Knowledge Management from Kent State University.

This event is being held at the State Library of Ohio in room 106.
6:30-7:00 Social/networking and snacks

7:00-8:00 Presentation followed by Q & A

A big thank you to Jeff Mixter for his presentation on linked data last night at the State Library of Ohio.

Jeff is a software engineer at OCLC in the Office of Research. His presentation, “Turning Metadata into Knowledge”, shared some of the research and experiments they are currently working on, particularly developing applications and services that publish linked data with RDF as the data standard. He touched on three examples: the Knowledge Pipeline/Vault, EntityJS, and the Person Lookup pilot. All projects look at how they can harvest data from other services such as WorldCat, VIAF, FAST, WikiData or authority files such as LOC, and deliver that data in a usable format.
