Social Media Program Manager                 

 

Position Summary:

Responsible for all social media communications with existing and potential members of ASIS&T. Responsible to increase all usage numbers, member and non-member, and to create high levels of satisfaction among users as a whole and subgroups by creating branded content and interactive experiences for the members of ASIS&T that also reaches out to, involves and engages potential members. Develops and promotes tools such as blogs, listserves, wikis and other social media, and is responsible for distributing Society-related news, content awareness and information, internal branding, community building, Intranet/knowledge management, and other focused messaging.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • developing an understanding of member interests, expertise and goals
     
  • researching member needs and news, through interviewing and analysis
     
  • serving as the point of contact with Editors of ASIS&T publications
     
  • partnering with staff and members to compose communications for subsets of the membership, as well as the entire Society
     
  • writing compelling messages for the ASIS&T website, Bulletin and other channels of communication
     
  • encouraging and facilitating member participation and engagement in any way possible
     
  • alerting the ASIS&T Board and Executive Director to new ways of accomplishing the above
     
  • participating in the development and implementation of a strategy for engaging and motivating our most active online advocates and encouraging others to become more engaged
     
  • staying up to date on new tools and how other organizations and companies are using them, so that ASIS&T uses these technologies effectively
     
  • working with the teams of volunteer moderators that oversee the forums, SIGs and Chapters, including keeping unwanted solicitations in check
     
  • being an advocate for the online community internally
     
  • providing management with grassroots feedback and ideas
     
  • helping envision and shape future web tools and direction for the community

Qualifications

  • Must be a very active member of at least 1, but preferably more, existing online communities
     
  • Must have exemplary written and verbal skills
     
  • Total comfort in the online world and a high degree of familiarity with social networking tools and protocol
     
  • Fair degree of familiarity with issues in Library and Information Science, Human computer interaction, information architecture
     
  • Ability to adapt to frequent change, prioritize constantly shifting opportunities and be
    strategically opportunistic
     
  • Experience in resolving community disputes, developing and enforcing community rules
     
  • Ability to teach, guide and encourage others about the best practices in this field, including
    patience with people new to Web 2.0 tools and culture
     
  • Familiarity with online community best practices, and experience interacting in a variety of online contexts
     
  • Excellent judgment about how to communicate appropriately within a complex, decentralized
    organization, especially about potentially controversial topics
     
  • Comfort with blogging and social network technology is expected, but advanced coding skills are not required
     
  • Aware of the need for the ethical use and distribution of information and of the need for ethical practices in information exchange
