Building a Digital Teaching Commons to Enhance Teaching and Learning: The MERIC Experience and Challenges

The panel is designed 1) to share with the ASIST community the development of an innovative project, MERIC, the Metadata Education and Research Information Center, 2) to discuss MERIC's potential for improving and enhancing cataloging and metadata education, and 3) to explore with the audience various issues and challenges related to turning MERIC into a virtual teaching commons. Sherry Vellucci will present the background and development of MERIC; Willima E. Moen will present the beta version of MERIC and the lessons learned; Francis Miksa will discuss the challenges of teaching cataloging and metadata and MERIC's potential for enhancing such education; and Diane I. Hillmann will discuss the needs of students and practitioners for metadata education and explore how MERIC can best meet those needs. The panel will solicit audience comments on the MERIC prototype, input on features to include in the MERIC Teaching Commons and suggestions for building a community of collaborators, identifying business models for MERIC, and addressing sustainability issues.
